5 simple ideas for cooking on a boat

Have you ever cooked on board a boat? If you haven’t, let me tell you that kitchens on boats are not the most spacious and functional. That is why practicality and ingenuity play a huge role when it comes to cooking on board.

In this post, we have listed five easy and healthy recipes to cook when you are sailing. All these recipes are perfect for cooking in a small and not equipped kitchen. Want to know the best part? You won’t need any special ingredients or cooking utensils. 

To start the day with energy: Avocado toast with eggs

Healthy breakfast for cooking on a boat

Ingredients:

  • Eggs
  • Bread
  • Avocado
  • Salt and pepper
  • Lemon juice (optional)

Preparation:

  1. Mash the avocado in a small bowl and season it with salt and pepper. For extra flavour, add a few drops of lemon juice.
  2. In a frying pan, prepare the eggs to your liking. Scrambled, boiled or fried, you decide! 
  3. Toast the slices of bread.
  4.  Place the bread slices on a plate and spread the mashed avocado on top. Add the cooked eggs and enjoy!

An appetizer: Caprese salad 

Salad for eating on a boat

Ingredients:

  • Tomatoes
  • Mozzarella cheese
  • Basil leaves
  • Balsamic vinegar
  • Olive oil

Preparation:

  1. Heat the balsamic vinegar in a small saucepan until it gets thick. Allow it to cool.
  2. Cut the cheese and tomato into wide slices and set aside. 
  3. Arrange the tomato and cheese slices on a plate and alternate them. Add a few basil leaves and finish with olive oil and balsamic vinegar paste. 

For lunch: Quinoa and chicken salad. 

Healthy lunch for eating onboard a boat

Ingredients:

  • Quinoa
  • Avocado
  • Cherry tomatoes
  • Chicken breast
  • Salad 
  • Lemon juice
  • Olive oil
  • Balsamic vinegar
  • Salt and pepper

Preparation:

  1. Boil the quinoa for about 15 minutes and drain. 
  2. Chop the avocado and cherry tomatoes.
  3. Cook the chicken on the grill, previously seasoned with salt and pepper.
  4. For the vinaigrette: mix the olive oil with lemon juice and balsamic vinegar.
  5.  Place a bed of quinoa on a plate and top with the avocado, cherry tomatoes and salad. Finally, add the chicken and the vinaigrette on top. Enjoy! 

For pasta lovers: Pasta bolognese 

Cook Pasta bolognese on a boat

Ingredients:

  • Minced meat
  • Spaghetti
  • Chopped onion
  • Chopped garlic
  • Olive oil
  • Tomato puree
  • Grated cheese of choice
  • Chopped carrot
  • Salt and pepper

Preparation:

  1. Add in a pan the olive oil, onion and garlic and cook until the onion turns yellow. Boil the pasta for about 10 minutes and drain.
  2. Add the meat to the pan and season with salt and pepper until lightly browned. Then add the carrot and cook until soft.
  3. Add the tomato puree to the pan, let the flavours integrate over low heat for 10 minutes.
  4. Let’s plate it up! Make a layer of spaghetti on a plate and add the meat on top. Finish with grated cheese to taste.

For dessert: Yoghurt and red fruit cup.

Easy dessert for cooking on a boat

Ingredients:

  • Strawberry
  • Raspberry
  • Natural yoghurt
  • Dried fruit of your choice
  • Honey

Preparation:

  1. Cut the fruits and nuts into small pieces.
  2. In a bowl, mix all the ingredients and sweeten to taste with honey. 
  3. In a glass or cup, add the mixture and decorate with a strawberry and raspberries. 

With these food recipe ideas, you can surprise the whole crew and delight their taste buds. There is no limit to healthy food, even when sailing.
