What to Take on a Picnic at Sea in Sorrento

Caprese Salad

Being located close to the island of Capri, it is no wonder the influence of the island has trickled into Sorrento, with one of the most popular dishes of the town being the traditional Italian Caprese salad. Available in most restaurants, the salad has been a staple in Sorrento since the town’s early days, with the treccia di Sorrento being one of the main ingredients in the salad, along with the locally grown tomatoes, basil and olive oil.

Limoncello

The Italian liqueur is one of the most famous liqueurs in Italy (after Campari), and is traditionally served chilled as an after-dinner digestivo, making it a perfect drink for a picnic at sea. Mainly produced in the south of Italy, specifically on the Amalfi Coast, Limoncello is easy to find on any street in Sorrento, as it is traditionally made with Sorrento (St. Teresa) lemons.

Taralli

A brilliant snack to take anywhere not just a picnic, taralli is a cracker popular in Southern Italy and can be made either sweet or savoury. For a sweet taralli, you may find the cracker to be glazed with sugar and it is often that sweet taralli will be dipped in wine, while on a savoury cracker, you may find the snack to be cooked with onion, garlic or chilli just to name a few.

Gnocchi alla Sorrentina

You can’t have a traditional Italian meal without having a pasta dish, and the most famous pasta dish of Sorrento is the Gnocchi alla Sorrentina. A simple comfort food, the dish is made only with gnocchi, tomato, basil and mozzarella, and is easy to replicate and make at home. However, for a proper Gnocchi alla Sorrentina, the gnocchi must be made from scratch, which can be a long process.

Treccia Cheese

Treccia cheese is the cheese of Sorrento and can be found in many popular dishes in the region such as a caprese salad. This mozzarella braided cheese is very beloved in the area, and is a great cheese to take with you on an outing at sea as it can be eaten on many different dishes, and is often thought to taste best with fresh vegetables such as tomatoes.

Popular in Italy and Spain, Cannelloni is a cylindrical type of lasagne that can be served with many different fillings, such as spinach and ricotta or beef. For a Sorrento-style cannelloni, the dish is stuffed with the popular treccia cheese, roasted peppers and aubergines, which makes it a delicious Italian comfort food.

For dessert, the traditional dessert of Campania is the Delizia al Limone (sometimes known as the Delizia di Sorrento). The Delizia al limone is a dome-shaped dessert, with a sponge-based, lemon-flavoured custard and the famous limoncello-based syrup on top. This dessert is often served in a single serving, so it is a great dish to create at home and take on a day out with you, such as on a day trip to the nearby island of Capri.
